1. Find KeyDirector in the Applications tab.
2. Select the KeyDirector program icon. KeyDirector displays the main screen.
NOTE: On first use, KeyDirector performs the following actions in sequence:
- Displays the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).
- Builds the Application list.
- Checks for existing backup data. If found, KeyDirector prompts you to restore the last backup.
- Displays the Welcome page
Subsequent startups bypass all of the above unless the EULA was not accepted or the Application list needs to be re-built.
Builtins are preconfigured commands that help you do useful things with
KeyDirector and your Android device. To view all of the builtin
commands:
1. Navigate to the KeyDirector main screen.

How do I...
Press the HOME button (small house symbol) on the bottom of your Android device.
1. Press the HOME button.
2. Touch the Applications tab (bottom edge of screen). A grid of
application icons appears. The icons are sorted in alphabetical order
from top to bottom.
3. Touch an icon to start an application.
Use a finger to lightly flick or swipe the screen up or down. The screen scrolls up or down quickly. To stop the scrolling, lightly touch the scrolling list. You can also lightly drag your finger on the list up or down to control scrolling. When dragging, you can pause and hold your finger in place to stop the list from scrolling. If the list fails to move up or down or stops after flicking, you have reached the end of the list.
Using your finger (do not use a stylus or sharp object), firmly touch
or tap the center of an icon or list item to select it. The item
flashes briefly. If audible feedback is enabled, you hear a short
scratch or click noise.
List items often (but not always) contain context menus that show
additional actions that can be performed on an item. To display the
context menu for a list item, long-press the list item until it is
highlighted and a menu appears. Release your finger, then select the
desired context menu item. If necessary, use the BACK button to dismiss
the context menu.
Android (v1.5 and later) provides an onscreen keyboard when a program
uses a text input field for character data entry. The text input field
usually has a white background. You can use the TRACKBALL or Directional Key to move focus
to a text input field. The TRACKBALL is the button-like control at the
bottom of most Android devices. The Directional Key (an alternative to the TRACKBALL) is at the bottom or on the slide-out keyboard. Use your fingers or thumb to move the TRACKBALL up, down, left, or right in the direction you want to move focus. If you have a Directional Key, press the left, right, top, or bottom edges to move the cursor.
When the text input field has focus and is highlighted, a vertical
blinking-line cursor appears. You can also move focus to the text input
field by touching it with your finger. Touching the KeyDirector text input field
also displays the onscreen keyboard, enabling character data entry.
Make sure the text input field for the cursor has focus. Roll the
TRACKBALL left or right to position the cursor within the existing
character data. If your device has a Directional Key instead of a TRACKBALL, press the left or right edge of the Directional key to move the cursor left or right.
1. To display the onscreen keyboard, touch or navigate to the text input field.
2. Select the keyboard letters, numbers, or symbols as required:
- Use the DEL key to backspace and/or delete characters.
- Use the Shift key (Up Arrow) to capitalize letters.
- Use the ?123 key to select numbers and symbols.
- Use the ALT key to select even more symbols.
- Use the Done key on the onscreen keyboard when you are finished
entering data. You can also use Done to move to the next line for
multiline text input.
- Use the Return key (the key with an arrow down and to the left) on
the hardware keyboard when you are finished entering data. It is
sometimes called Enter or CR and performs the same function as the Done
key on the onscreen keyboard.
- Select the BACK button to close the onscreen keyboard, if necessary.
Press the BACK button. The BACK button is a dedicated button at the bottom of the device and has a left-pointing arrow symbol.
For portrait mode, hold the device in front of you so that the screen
is vertical (the HOME button is at the bottom of the device).
To change to landscape mode, rotate the device 90 degrees
counter-clockwise so that the HOME button is on your right as you view
the device. The display blurs and then reorients to landscape mode. To
return to portrait mode, rotate the device 90 degrees clockwise so that
the HOME button is again at the bottom of the device. The display blurs
and then reorients to portrait mode.
Use the trackball to move the cursor or highlight to the desired item.
Android automatically scrolls long messages from left to right so you
can read the entire message.

shakes once. Android displays the Home screen underneath the
KeyDirector icon.
3. Drag your finger to an open area on the Home screen.
4. Release your finger from the icon, and a shortcut for KeyDirector snaps into an open area of the Home screen.
1. At the Home screen, find the shortcut that you want to move or delete.
2. Press and hold the application icon until it expands and the phone shakes once.
3. Drag the icon toward the Applications tab (transforms to a red
wastebasket), and release your finger as you drag the icon over and
into the wastebasket. If you only want to move the icon or cancel
deletion, release your finger over open space.
Use one of these methods:
- From the Applications tab, press HOME >
Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > select
KeyDirector in the application list > Uninstall. To cancel the
Uninstall process or return to KeyDirector, press the BACK button
(multiple times, if necessary). You can also press HOME and press a
KeyDirector shortcut (if you have one) to quickly re-launch.
- From within KeyDirector:
1. Navigate to the KeyDirector main screen.
2. Enter "app" in the text input field to go to the Applications list.
3. Scroll or press the keyboard "k" key, or use the search button to find KeyDirector in the applications list.
4. Long-press the KeyDirector list item. A menu asks if you want to uninstall the application. Select "Uninstall App?"
NOTE: Before uninstalling, KeyDirector automatically backs up user data using the "bak" builtin.
To reinstall KeyDirector after uninstalling, you must launch the
Android "Market" application, search for KeyDirector in the list, and
click through to install.
KeyDirector automatically prompts you to do this. During the KeyDirector startup sequence after a new install, KeyDirector checks to see if any backup
data exists. If backup data is present and contains launchers, KeyDirector
asks if you want to restore the last backup. If you answer OK, KeyDirector finds the most recent backup and uses the "restor" builtin function to restore it. This can take
a few seconds. Otherwise, KeyDirector continues with the rest of the
first-time startup process.

- Select a Transcript item from a previous application launcher launch.
In the Android Marketplace, you can download many applications that have the same name.
KeyDirector uses a suffix with a number to distinguish duplicate application names from different sources.
For example, the application name "Calculator(2)" describes the second instance of an application named "Calculator."
Yet another calculator application from a different author would appear as "Calculator(3)," and so on.
When entering application names in the command line, you must enter the case-sensitive KeyDirector name with the
suffix to launch the desired application.
Use one of these methods:
- If your device has a hardware keyboard, press any alphabetic key to position the list to the first item
starting with that key.
- You can also use the MENU > Search item or the dedicated Search
key (magnifying glass) on your hardware or onscreen keyboard.
KeyDirector launches a dialog box where you can type a few characters
or the whole name of an application, builtin,
launcher or contact (lower or upper case). KeyDirector moves the list

first displays the EULA and Build App List screens. Then, if backup
data is available, KeyDirector asks if you want to restore the last
backup. Answer "OK" to restore the last
backup or "Cancel" to proceed directly to the Welcome screen followed by the main screen. The "restor"
builtin command can always be used at a later time to restore backup
data.
KeyDirector gives a short message stating first the number of restored
launchers and then the number of restored Transcript items. If there
was an error during a "restor," the device shakes, and a Warning icon
(!) appears in the Notification bar with details of the last error
found. A number on a red circle near the notification icon indicates
the number of errors found (if greater than 1).
1. Launch the "export" builtin command. For example, in the text input field, type "export" then select Done or press Return.
For other ways to execute a builtin command, see Launch any builtin command.
2. Type the desired email address in the text input field at the top of
the screen. Or touch the "Select Email From Contacts" button, and
choose an email address.
3. Touch the Submit button to launch the Email application and build a message containing the exported data.
4. Touch the Send button to send the message from the Email application to the desired address.
1. Use editing tools on a PC or other device to copy and paste the
email backup data (contained in the message body) into a text file with
a name of your choosing.
2. Use Android FTP or another sync program to transfer the text backup
file to the /sdcard/keydirector_bak directory on the SD card.
3. Use "restor" to restore the desired backup file. For example, in the text input field, type "restor" then select Done or press Return.
For other ways to execute a builtin command, see Launch any builtin command.
KeyDirector automatically saves the 10 most recent (.json) backup files. Backup
files produced by "bak" are stored in time/date-stamped files in the
/sdcard/keydirector_bak folder on the SD card. These files can be
managed or removed like any other files on the SD card. Backup files
imported into /sdcard/keydirector_bak are never removed by KeyDirector
and can be managed using file-management utilities.
NOTE: older backup files (text files that do not have a .json extension) are never removed by KeyDirector so that users cannot lose data when transitioning to the latest .json backup file format.
1. View the list of backup files by launching the "restor" builtin
command. For example, in the text input field, type "restor," then select Done or
press Return. For other ways to execute a builtin command, see Launch any builtin command.
2. Select the desired file based on the time/date stamp or "export"ed name. The file contents are displayed.
To return to the list of backup files, press the BACK button.

Alternately, you can use the "howdoi" builtin. To run the builtin, use one of these methods:
- Enter "howdoi" in the text input field.
- Touch an instance of "howdoi" in the Transcript.
- Enter "builtin" in the text input field, and select the "howdoi" item in the builtin list.
In the KeyDirector main screen, pressing the Search key on your mobile device starts a Google™ search. However, when you are using KeyDirector Help, FAQ, or How Do I builtins, you can use the Search key to search those topics:
- Navigate to the Help table of contents, the FAQ, or the How Do I. For example, from any screen, select Menu > Help, and touch "FAQ" or "How Do I," or use the "help," "faq," or "howdoi" builtins.
- Use one of these methods to initiate a search:
- Press the dedicated search button (magnifying glass).
- Select Menu > Search.
- If your device has a hardware keyboard, start typing a search query. A query box appears automatically (this feature does not work in Help).
Note these search considerations:
- The first search attempt displays an initialization screen while KeyDirector builds the search index database on the mobile device. This process can take 20 to 30 seconds, but only needs to be done once. The initial search will start when initialization is done.
- Search queries are limited to a single word. Additional words are ignored.
- The JBH Engineering web site provides the same FAQ and How Do I content and can also be searched:
http://jbhengineering.com/phpmyfaq/
The How Do I provides an expandable list of categories with topics that tell you how to use KeyDirector. To display the How Do I, see Display the How Do I.
To expand or collapse a category in the How Do I, hold the cursor over the category, and select it.
To expand all or collapse all categories in the How Do I, select Menu > Collapse All or Expand All.
Back, Forward, and Quit buttons are provided in KeyDirector online help screens that contain hypertext links. These buttons help you navigate to and from help topics as if using a browser. The Back and Forward buttons work the same as the Back and Forward buttons on a browser. The Quit button exits the current activity and returns to the activity that started it. In this sense, it functions the same as the dedicated Back key on your mobile device.
If a topic contains no hyperlinks, no buttons are displayed on the page. To return to the previous screen, press the dedicated Back key.

How do I...
Display the About or Welcome screen. The KeyDirector version (for example, KeyDirector 1.1) appears at the top of the screen. For more information, see Display the Welcome message.
KeyDirector silently checks for upgrades at startup or whenever the "Check for Upgrades" setting is toggled to ON and an Internet connection is present. KeyDirector compares its internal version with the latest version on the http://jbhengineering.com/keydirector/ Web site. If a newer version is available, KeyDirector generates a
notification. If you select the notification, KeyDirector provides Yes
or No prompts for upgrading. If you answer Yes, KeyDirector searches
the Android Market for the upgrade so you can install
the latest version. You can also cancel the upgrade.
The "Check for Upgrades" setting is ON by default. To check for upgrades or turn off the setting:
- Navigate to the KeyDirector main screen.
- MENU > View Settings.
- Touch the "Check for Upgrades" setting to select or deselect it, as needed.
NOTE: The upgrade check is silent (performed in the background). You are alerted only if a newer version exists.

How do I...
1. Navigate to the KeyDirector main screen.
2. In the text input field, type a phone number. Spaces and dashes are optional. KeyDirector launches the Phone Dialer and looks up the Contact name (if one exists) in the Contacts list.
Note these considerations:
- KeyDirector passes the specified number to the Android Phone Dialer. Any raw number that works with the Phone Dialer should work in KeyDirector as long as it contains only numbers, spaces, and dashes.
- International calls must contain all the numbers required to dial the call manually. NOTE: This feature has not been tested for international call support.
- If the specified number is found in the Contacts list, KeyDirector shows the name and type of number (in addition to the number itself) in the
Transcript entry. If the specified number does not have a corresponding Contacts
item, only the phone number is displayed in the Transcript.
- The Transcript entry for the phone number can be selected (like any other
KeyDirector Transcript item) to re-launch the item (re-dial the telephone
number).
- Shutdown termination characters ((.) for close and (!) for exit) also work
with telephone number input.
- KeyDirector does not support creating launchers for a telephone
number entered in the text input field, but the KeyDirector "add" builtin has always supported launcher creation
for telephone numbers that exist in the Contacts list.
Use one of these methods:
- In the text input field, type "togrm," then select Done or press Return.
- Select a Transcript item containing the "togrm" builtin command.
The "togrm" builtin command displays a dialog box that
allows you to choose the ringer mode
- Normal -- Vibrate Per Setting (Android Settings > Sound & display > Phone vibrate)
- Silent -- No Vibrate
- Silent -- Vibrate
For more information about the "togrm" builtin command, see Can I control the ringer mode on my phone by using KeyDirector?
